The State of the Nonprofit Sector Today
Many nonprofit directors came to the role because of a personal passion, not necessarily because of a background in nonprofit management. Most directors are unaware of the complicated and demanding roles involved in the sector. Often a small nonprofit executive has to be a cheerleader, a check writer, a referee, and even the janitor. The good thing is that many of these skills aren’t hard to learn or put into practice, but nonprofit leaders need a little advising and coaching on what tools to use and when to use them.
Looking back on my experience, I was probably a little farther off than most nonprofit directors. While I had academic training in public administration and found there are skills and concepts practiced in both sectors, I also learned that I had much to learn and was thankful to be able to dive deep into nonprofit management. I have learned something very obvious; not enough of our sector’s leaders have the capacity, skills or confidence to do their jobs well, let alone succeed.
