One of the struggles most (if not all) leaders of small non-profits invariably face is the topic of board responsibilities. Most executive directors know we are legally required to have one but fewer know what the responsibilities of the job entail. This is pretty understandable since executive directors often don’t even know what their own responsibilites are, other than keeping the ship headed in the right direction.

This dynamic is a recipe for dysfunction. Those in charge of keeping the executive director to account are often least prepared and invest the least amount of time in to the organization; their committment often begins and ends with the monthly or quarterly board meeting.
