The foundation of the Lean Six Sigma appoach is a handy tool in the nonprofit management toolbox
A few years ago, the State of Ohio introduced a program under then Governor John Kasich, called LeanOhio. The point of the program was to bring some of the management tools in manufacturing to the public and government sector. I was one of the first local government leaders in the entire state to go through the LeanOhio training.
What we learned was something that was used heavily in the private sector, a toolbox called Lean Six Sigma. This was a series of disciplines, created mostly in Japan that was designed to get every last bit of efficiency and effectiveness out of process. I’ll admit, I doubted these process could easily be applied to government work, I mean, we weren’t making widgets after all. But after the first exercise, I was a believer.
